Home
Ownership and Public Policy
The
nation’s 72 million homeowners are the largest single identifiable
voting block in the U.S. Among major population segments they are second
only to retirees in terms of their likelihood to vote. Public policy on a
wide range of issues has a significant impact on homeowners and home
ownership. These include such core issues as the mortgage interest
deduction, capitol gains taxation on the sale of the home, real estate
laws and home financing policy and practice.
However
these are not the only issues that significantly affect homeowners and
home ownership. Housing is the single greatest monthly expense for most
homeowners. Those costs leave many homeowners with little extra
discretionary spending capability. Therefore any policy that substantially
impacts the cost of living inevitably affects many homeowners.
For
this reason homeowners must understand significant issues affecting
them, express their views to officials at the federal, state and local
level, and exercise their right to vote at each level. The American Homeowners Grassroots
Alliance provides assistance in all three areas to time-challenged homeowners.
AHGA focuses primarily on issue analysis and education, identifying
the core elements of each issue from the perspective of the average
homeowner and presenting them to both homeowners and policymakers in a
concise and understandable fashion.
Who are the nation's homeowners?
Most
homeowners are politically moderate; about 1/3 are independents and the
remainder are split evenly between the two major political parties. The
Alliance seeks to reflect that balance in the development and execution of
its policy programs. They include helping you to express your views on
issues (our link to instantly contact your legislators is included on
every policy position) and joining the majority of your peers who are
registered to vote.
We
would appreciate hearing your thoughts on our policy positions and your
recommendations for new issues for us to consider.
